JON JACKA
Principal
Jon Jacka has expertise in all areas of the architectural process. Over the past 15 years he has worked with numerous architectural practices gaining experience in projects of vastly differing scales. His practical experience has exposed him to a variety of design approaches with which he has been able to refine his own particular approach to design and project management. He established ROOM-E in 2004.
Between 1994 and 2000 Jon worked with a number of small progressive practices. His earliest experience was with Col James, of Sydney University’s IB Fell Housing Institute, and Roderick Simpson, both significant figures in the field of architecture and urban design with a specific focus on affordable housing and environmentally sensitive design.
In 2000 Jon worked with Patrick O’Carrigan and Associates (then the President of the Board of Architects) on residential projects and on a prototype for a regional sports centre for the NSW Department of Sports and Recreation. Late 2000 he joined PTW Architects, gaining experience on public projects and large scale commercial and residential projects. At PTW Jon was involved in the design of the Sydney Theatre in Walsh Bay (awarded the RAIA Public Architecture Award 2004), the Lend Lease Headquarters at 30 The Bond Hickson Road (awarded RAIA Commercial, Interior and Energy Efficiency Architecture Awards 2005), the Strategic Planning Report for the Hobart Theatre Tasmania, St Margarets Hospital Redevelopment in Surry Hills and the urban design of Hengqin Island Resort & Business District in Zhuhai China. In 2003 Jon worked in the offices of Durbach Block Architects before establishing his own practice.
From 2004 Jon has concentrated on developing the portfolio and practice of ROOM-E. Significant completed projects include the Gallagher House in Birchgrove, the Peacock Point House in Balmain East, additions to a house in Crows Nest and the Parallel House/Office/Gallery in Newtown.
JESSE McNICOLL
Principal Planner & Urban Designer
Jesse McNicoll graduated from Sydney University with the University Medal. He has expertise in sub-regional structure planning, urban design master planning for large urban precincts, statutory planning and architecture. In 2007/8 Jesse delivered the Urban Design Study: Chippendale, Darlington, Newtown, Camperdown for the City of Sydney.
Between 2003 and 2006 Jesse worked for State and Local Governments on a number of significant projects including the Parramatta Road Structure Plan for the Department of Planning and Sydney Olympic Park Master Plan 2030 for the Sydney Olympic Park Authority. He has also completed Town Centre Studies for Auburn and Lidcombe Town Centres for Auburn Council and delivered analytical studies and recommendations for new LEPs and DCPs. Jesse has also worked on large scale projects within the private sector – notable award winning projects include the Rose Bay Commercial Centre DCP with Hill Thalis and Mondrian Apartments with Stanisic Associates Architects.
Jesse also has a keen interest in building design and detail and worked on a number of large apartment buildings and on retail and hospitality interiors including the Marcs shops and hotel interiors for the Greens Corporation.
