08-07-08 / URBAN / SYDNEY OLYMPIC PARK MASTER PLAN 2030

The Sydney Olympic Master Plan has been put on public exhibition after more than five years in preparation. The
sustainable urban design framework supports up to 28,000 new workers and 6000 new dwellings as well as a sports education campus. JM was involved co-ordinating the urban design strategy while he worked at the Sydney Olympic Park Authority in 2005-06 and was more recently hired as a consultant to help finish the master plan for exhibition.

The Gallagher house in Birchgrove (more photos to come)

A major addition to a terrace house in Birchgrove over 4 levels. The addition transforms an existing terrace with little natural daylight and an awkward relationship to the rear garden to a house filled with light and a dining room which is used for both internal and external dining.

The main part of the addition is for living areas housed in a three-storey
contemporary wing to the rear of the existing terrace. The living areas are
stacked on top of each other with a rec room in the basement area; a dining room at the ground floor and a lounge room at the first floor. The dining room and lounge rooms are visually connected by a double height space which serves as an informal sitting area and brings daylight in from above...

08-05-07 / URBAN / CAMPERDOWN/NEWTOWN UDS CITY OF SYDNEY

Urban Design Study: Chippendale, Darlington, Newtown, Camperdown and West Redfern for the City of Sydney City Plan Development Group. The project involved a comprehensive review and analysis of the study area, including over 4000 individual parcels of land, and provided recommendations for the new LEP template and DCP controls as well as specific site controls for opportunity sites. Jesse McNicoll acted as the principal urban designer and planner in a team with the Government Architect's Office.

08-05-20 / ARCH / RES / M / PARALLEL HOUSE/OFFICE/GALLERY

1. A new building in Newtown in Sydney's inner ring on a lot subdivided from the rear of a terrace house. Located opposite the railway line.
2.The total property area is 75sqm and almost a perfect parallelogram. Council approved an unrivalled floor space ratio for a single residence of 2:1.
3. It
was built using concrete panels (8 panels, 3 storeys each) which informed all the construction detailing - the building was built as a kit of parts with minimal on-site carpentry required.
4. The construction process was streamlined - the walls and all the framing went up in a week - the crane arrived on Monday and the roof framing was complete by Friday.
5. The building is divided into three areas - the Ground, 1st and 2nd floor levels - which have their own particular character and uses.
6. The ground floor is adaptable and can be used as an office space (currently housing the office of ROOM-E), a small gallery or two bedrooms and a garage - intermediate walls move to facilitate this, the walls are effectively 3.5m wide hinged doors.
7. The 1st floor is an open plan living area with a large deck over what would be the garage below - the deck has a view directly up a laneway covered in grafitti.
8. The 2nd floor internal space is dominated by the slope of the roof which angles down in an L-shape around another roof deck - it's used as a large bedroom with a bathroom and feels like an urban camp site.
9. Small works are still to be complete including an artwork on the garage door.
10. Everything moves...

07-07-20 / ARCH / RES / M / PEACOCK POINT HOUSE

The Peacock Point House in Balmain East photographed at practical completion. The design consists of a 17m long x 2m wide addition over two levels to the south of the existing building envelope and directly adjacent to Peacock Point Reserve and Sydney Harbour. The property is the best of those fronting onto the reserve.

The addition was designed to make the smallest possible footprint while still providing for the owner's brief. The 2m wide addition (like a gantry attached to the side of the existing building) allowed the whole of the interior arrangement of the existing building to be reconfigured and the relationship with the harbour to be celebrated.

The addition is constructed of an extraordinarily light steel frame into which glazing and fc sheet panels are inserted. The steel framing relates to the steel structure of the White Bay Container Terminal to the west of the site (albeit at a smaller scale). The windows are frameless providing uninhibited views to the harbour. Internal sliding panels can be pulled across the windows for privacy, warmth and to control glare.

The project deserves some professional photography.

07-05-10 / ARCH / RES / M / FUNNEL HOUSE

An addition to a house in Carter Street, Cammeray. The concept design proposes 2 funnel-shaped skylights to bring natural daylight in from above to living areas which otherwise face south. The skylights also provide spatial definition to the different areas below - the first defines the kitchen and dining room; the second defines the lounge room. The skylight over the dining room and kitchen area is a clever adaptation of the rear of the existing roof. The model shows the internal envelope.

05-07-11 / TALK / ARCH / DARCH 10 BY 10 SLIDE NIGHT

The launch of DARCH (the RAIA group with vigour). 10 architects were asked to talk about 10 images that inspired them for 10 seconds a slide. JM was the last presentation of the night. His interest in precast concrete's capability for mass-production was described using the Sydney Opera House (with its precast concrete shells) as an example of the material's potential.
Other interests include the Grundvig church in Copenhagen, Nervi plastic concrete forms, GIS mapping technology and atlases and visual encyclopedias.

05-02-12 / ARCH / RES / S / ADDITION IN CROWS NEST

At the rear of a terrace in Crows Nest we made an addition to both the house and the garden in one. The lounge room was designed to be able to be completely opened or closed - as an extension to the external deck or the internal spaces depending on your orientation. The addition has been associated with the lightness of a tarpaulin, pays a small tribute to the case study houses and was built at an extremely low cost.

We also updated the kitchen and added a bathroom that you access through a cupboard.

98-08-12 / ARCH / INT / L / MAJOR INTERIORS PROJECTS

We have a continued interest in the architectural and theatrical possibilities of interior spatial design and take these as opportunities to explore the related fields of industrial and furniture design. Our interest extends well into the full spectrum of what is communicated by a brand and will continue to be involved in associated graphic design with our interiors projects.

Major interior projects completed with LPA include:
Bennelong Restaurant at the Sydney Opera House for Gai Bilson (pictured)
The Greenwood Hotel, Pontoon and Wallaby Bars for Greens Corp
